My Twin Pregnancy

I was in total shock when I found out I was pregnant with Identical twins. I was 6 weeks pregnant and it was my first ultrasound. It took over nearly 2 weeks for me to completely grasp the concept and not be completely freaked out.

M twins were monochorionic diamniotic or MoDi. They shared a placenta, but had their own sac inside of the placenta. This made it safer because their umbilical cords could not wrap around each other. The first week I was pregnant they thought I may be pregnant with MoMo twins, meaning in the same sac. It was very scary. I was immediately referred to a High-Risk Specialist. I saw my regular OB as often as a normal pregnancy. I saw my specialist every 2 weeks. We ran into some issues with fluid levels and I saw her every 10 days. I was told to to think of my OB as my doctor to keep me healthy and my specialist was the babies doctor to keep them healthy.

I was ridiculously sick the first trimester. I lost a total of 10 pounds. My doctor's were not worried about my weight loss. I slept the entire trimester. I would get home from teaching and go to sleep.

Second trimester was AMAZING! I felt much better, and was able to function like a normal person!

At 27 weeks my cervix shortened dramatically from 3.7 cm to 2.4 cm. Anything less than 2.5 at this gestation is a concern. I was admitted into The Woman's Hospital. It was a shock, but I was willing to do whatever it takes to keep them baking. We had an amazing experience in the antepartum unit of the hospital. My husband and I lived there for 10 weeks. He spent every night with a few exceptions with me. He slept on a tiny couch.

Ultrasounds... after 14 weeks the boys were so big they were not clear enough to see something that would be worth posting.

The following are my 32 week Maternity Photos...

The following pictures are the day before I delivered at 34 weeks 6 days...

After 9 weeks on bed rest I went into labor on Easter 2011. I made it to 35 weeks! My boys were born via cesarean section at 1:13 and 1:14 PM on April 24, 2011. Drake Brandon was 5 lbs 11 oz and 17.5 inches. Hunter Paul was 5 lbs 10 oz and 17.5 inches.

My boys spent 10 days in the NICU learning how to drink their bottles. They were perfectly healthy. It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life to leave them and go home. My c-section recovery was not bad at all. I did not need extra help, and I was able to walk to the NICU within 2 days of delivery.

  1. I can only imagine the blow of the news the first time you learned you're carrying two lives inside. It must've been scary at first. Anyway, I'm glad they're MoDi. I think nothing can comfort a conceiving mother more than knowing that her babies are safe inside. These are really nice pictures, by the way. It's pretty vivid how the boys are giving you happiness even when they're still inside your womb. :) -->Chelsea
